The Epic Road Trip from Delhi to Manali: My Journey to the Heart of the Himalayas

There’s something magical about hitting the road and letting the journey unfold before you. Hi, I’m Javed Baraf, and I recently embarked on a road trip from Delhi to Manali, a journey that took me through bustling cities, serene landscapes, and finally to the mesmerizing mountains of Himachal Pradesh. If you’ve ever considered taking this road trip, let me tell you—it’s an experience you won’t forget. Buckle up as I take you through the highlights of this unforgettable journey.

Setting Off: The Beginning of an Adventure

We started our journey early in the morning to beat the Delhi traffic. As the sun rose, the city slowly faded in the rearview mirror, and we found ourselves on the open highway. The excitement of leaving behind the chaotic city life for the tranquility of the mountains was palpable.

The route we took was the NH44, which is well-maintained and offers a smooth drive. Our first major stop was Murthal, a place famous for its dhabas (roadside eateries). A hearty breakfast of aloo parathas and chai at one of these dhabas is a must! It not only fuels you for the journey ahead but also gives you a taste of the authentic flavors of North India.

Into the Hills: Chandigarh to Mandi

After a brief stop in Chandigarh, where we stretched our legs and refueled, we continued our journey. As we left the city behind, the scenery began to change dramatically. The flat plains gave way to rolling hills, and the air turned crisp and cool. This is when the real beauty of the trip starts to reveal itself.

The drive from Chandigarh to Mandi is nothing short of spectacular. The winding roads take you through lush green valleys, with the Beas River accompanying you for most of the journey. There are numerous picturesque spots along the way where you can stop, take in the views, and click some stunning photographs.

The Final Stretch: Climbing to Manali

As we approached Mandi, the terrain became more rugged, and the roads started to twist and turn more sharply. This is where the real adventure begins. The drive from Mandi to Manali is an exhilarating experience. The road follows the Beas River, and the views of the surrounding mountains and waterfalls are breathtaking.

We made a quick stop at Pandoh Dam, which is a sight to behold. The turquoise waters of the dam, set against the backdrop of verdant hills, make for a perfect pit stop. Another must-see is the Aut Tunnel, one of the longest road tunnels in India, which adds an element of thrill to the journey.

Arriving in Manali: A Gateway to Paradise

After a nearly 12-hour journey, we finally reached Manali. The first thing that strikes you is the change in atmosphere. The cool mountain breeze, the scent of pine trees, and the distant snow-capped peaks make you forget the long drive instantly.

Manali is a charming hill station that offers a blend of adventure and tranquility. Whether you want to indulge in adventure sports like paragliding and river rafting or simply relax in the lap of nature, Manali has something for everyone. The town’s vibrant market, old wooden houses, and beautiful temples add to its charm.
